Pomegranate juice is popular with consumers due to its documented health benefits linked to its anti-oxidative properties. Researchers have found that pomegranate juice has superior antioxidant activity compared to other popular fruit juices such as grape, orange and apple. The concern is that pomegranate fruit may be adulterated with a filler juice such as apple juice. The adulteration of pomegranate juice with apple juice means that there is not an appearance change and does not cause a discernible change to the sugar concentrations. An indication of adulteration of pomegranate with apple juice can in part be determined by measuring the malic acid concentration as amount in apple juice has a concentration of 4.5 g/L and pomegranate juice has 0.57 g/L.
